The Patriots made their second signing of free agency by adding Frank Kearse, a 6-4, 315-pound defensive lineman entering his sixth season, according to Kearse's Instagram post.
Kearse, 27, attended Alabama A&M and spent the past two seasons in Washington, although he was on and off the roster at times. He will vie for a depth role up front, particularly in the Patriots lose the services of free agent Akiem Hicks, who is reportedly meeting with the Bears.
He appeared in 19 games for the Redskins and had 13 tackles and four sacks during his time in Washington. He's also played for Dallas (2013) and Carolina (2011-12) and has 29 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 35 career games. Kearse entered the league as a seventh-round pick for Miami in 2011 but never played for the Dolphins.
With Malcom Brown and Alan Branch at the top of the depth chart, Kearse figures to battle for a backup role with Dominique Easley and Chris Jones.
