The Patriots dropped their second straight home game, this one a 13-0 whitewashing at the hands of the Buffalo Bills in front of 20,732 at BU Field.
The Bills took control from the outset, scoring on just their third play from scrimmage. Buffalo quarterback Tommy O'Connell hooked up with running back Carl Smith, who took a quick screen pass 58 yards for the game's first touchdown.
Early in the second quarter the Bills extended their lead. Back-to-back offside penalties on the Patriots set up Buffalo at the Boston 2 and Wray Carlton plunged into the end zone to complete the game's scoring. The Patriots offense misfired most of the night as quarterbacks Butch Songin and Tommy Greene had trouble hooking up with their receivers. Songin tossed a pair of interceptions in the Buffalo end zone and Boston mustered just 233 yards of total offense.
