First-rounder Kiwanuka signs with Giants

First-round draft pick Mathias Kiwanuka reached an agreement on a five-year, nearly $7 million contract with the New York Giants.

ALBANY, N.Y. (July 27, 2006) -- First-round draft pick Mathias Kiwanuka reached an agreement on a five-year, nearly $7 million contract with the New York Giants.

The NFC East champions also announced they had reached agreement with tackle Guy Whimper, the second of two fourth-round picks. His signing assures the Giants will have all their rookies in training camp when practice starts July 28.

Kiwanuka will earn nearly $5 million in guaranteed money under terms of the deal.

The Boston College defensive end had 32Ā½ sacks in his final three seasons. He will have to compete for playing time with Pro Bowl defensive ends Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora, and highly regarded second-year player Justin Tuck.

This has been a busy week for Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi. Earlier this week, he signed receiver Sinorice Moss, the Giants' second-round pick, to a four-year contract that included $1.91 million in guaranteed money.

Gerris Wilkinson, the Georgia Tech linebacker who was the third-round pick, signed a four-year deal on July 26, agent Kenny Zuckerman said.

Accorsi also confirmed the signings of defensive tackle Barry Cofield, safety Charles Peprah and cornerback Gerrick McPhearson, the Giants' other draft picks.
