Game Notes: Patriots snap a five-game winning streak in preseason openers

The following are game notes from the New England Patriots preseason game vs. the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field on Thursday, August 7 2014.

*The Patriots snapped a five-game winning streak in preseason openers with 23-6 loss at the Washington Redskins. New England is 10-5 in preseason openers since Bill Belichick became head coach in 2000.

*QB Ryan Mallett started the game and played the entire first half, finishing 5-for-12 for 55 yards.

*2014 second-round pick QB Jimmy Garoppolo entered the game in the second half and finished 9-of-13 for 157 yards, including a 53-yard pass and a 26-yard touchdown pass to WR Brian Tyms.

*S Patrick Chung, a 2009 second-round draft pick who was re-acquired by the Patriots after spending the 2013 season with Philadelphia, was in the starting lineup at safety.

*Dan Connolly started the game at center after starting all of the 2013 season at at right guard. He took over as the starting center in 2011 after Dan Koppen was lost to a season-ending injury in the opener.

*First-year OL Jordan Devey, who spent his rookie season in 2013 on the New England practice squad, started at left guard in place of Logan Mankins. Devey moved to left tackle in the second half.

*With rookie free agents TE Asa Watson and CB Malcolm Butler in the starting lineup, it marked sixth straight year that New England had at least one rookie in the starting lineup in the preseason opener.

2013 – second-round WR Aaron Dobson
2012 - first-round picks DE Chandler Jones and LB Dont'a Hightower
2011 - first-round pick T Nate Solder and fifth-round pick TE Lee Smith
2010 - first-round pick CB Devin McCourty and second-round pick LB Brandon Spikes started against the on defense, while second-round pick TE Rob Gronkowski and fourth-round pick TE Aaron Hernandez started on offense.
2009 – sixth-round pick DL Myron Pryor

*Seven of the eight veteran players that are new to the Patriots in 2014 played against Washington – LB James Anderson, CB Brandon Browner, S Patrick Chung, LB Darius Fleming, WR Brandon LaFell, DE Will Smith and WR Brian Tyms. Anderson, Browner, Chung, Fleming and LaFell were in the starting lineup. The only newly acquired veteran that did not play was CB Darrelle Revis.

*DL Vince Wilfork, DL Tommy Kelly and T Sebastian Vollmer made a successful return to action after missing significant time in 2013 due to injury and were in the starting lineup.

*Second-year LB Steve Beauharnais led the team with nine total tackles.
