Turns out all those quarterback visits were for a reason. With their second pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Patriots selected quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from Eastern Illinois. In his senior season, Garoppolo threw for 53 touchdowns to go along with 5,000 yards through the air. The 6-foot-2 quarterback is known for his quick release and accuracy but does not possess a strong arm. As Andy Hart put it on the PFW in Progress Draft Show, he appears to be the anti-Ryan Mallett. PFW's Paul Perillo says that this pick shows that Belichick is preparing for the future - a world that involves life without Tom Brady. After taking the stage in New York, Garoppolo spoke with the New England media and said that he's excited to learn from Tom Brady.
Just as the Patriots were getting ready to make their second selection of the night, the team chose to trade the pick with the Jacksonville Jaguars. New England received the Jaguars fourth-round pick (105th overall) and sixth-round pick (179th overall) in return for the team's third-round selection (93rd overall). The Patriots now have six picks in the remaining four rounds of the Draft, including three fourth-round picks, three sixth-round picks, and one seventh-round pick. With so many picks on the third and final day of the Draft Andy Hart believes it's time to address the team's needs.
