It's no secret that Rob Gronkowski's retirement has impacted the offense, leaving Tom Brady without the game's most dangerous weapon at the position. But it also has left the team without viable tight ends as just Ryan Izzo and Matt LaCosse have tried to hold down the position by themselves, in LaCosse's case with a bad ankle.
The position has been thin all season and but perhaps the Patriots could get some help in that regard if they choose to activate Ben Watson, who is finished serving his four-game suspension for violating the league's policy on PEDs. The Boston Herald is thinking along similar lines with regard to Watson. The Athletic says Watson should be able to provide more at the position.
