News Blitz 7/14: Logan Ryan could begin the season starting opposite Darrelle Revis

The Patriots.com News Blitz gets you up-to-date on the latest Patriots news from local and national media.

Erik Frenz](http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/extrapoints/2014/07/willsmithaddsmissingveteranpresencetopatrio.html) of Boston.com projects Patriots defensive ends Zach Moore and Jake Bequette to be cut following training camp.

"Moore has a lot of upside due to his athleticism, but still remains a project and could benefit from a year on the practice squad (assuming he makes it there before being claimed off waivers)," writes Frenz. "Bequette has two years to make an impact and his absence from active game day rosters, along with the Patriots' acquisition of several defensive ends since his arrival, are both not good signs for his future prospects with the team." Nick Underhill of MassLive.com completes his ranking of the top 10 Patriots with QB Tom Brady at No. 1.

"There has been a lot of talk this offseason about how the New England quarterback is beginning to show signs of decline," adds Underhill. "And perhaps he is, but a declining Brady is still one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL." READ MORE>>

Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston envisions second-year cornerback Logan Ryan as the Patriots starter opposite Darrelle Revis to begin the 2014 season.

"Praised for his smarts by veteran cornerback Darrelle Revis, Ryan took mostly second-team reps in spring camps behind Revis and free-agent signing Brandon Browner," notes Reiss. "His ball skills produced a team-leading five interceptions last season and he'd probably be the starter opposite Revis if the season started today and Browner was serving his four-game suspension." Christopher Price](http://itiswhatitis.weei.com/sports/newengland/football/patriots/2014/07/14/countdown-to-camp-wide-receiver/) of WEEI.com calls Patriots WR Brandon LaFell the "key new player" for the team's receiving corp.

"There's a belief he could be moved around the offense like a chess piece, as his athleticism certainly opened some eyes during the spring workouts," writes Price. "The biggest key, by his own admission, is making sure he's got his playbook down. He acknowledged this past spring that Carolina utilized a numbers system when it came to calling plays, while the Patriots operate using code words. It's a challenge, but one LaFell feels he can overcome." READ MORE>>

Marc Sessler of NFL.com writes that Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald recently stated that the Patriots have never approached him about a trade.

"Nothing at all," he told USA Today, when asked if he knew anything about the Patriots exploring a trade. "I mean, I heard stuff that was being said. But there was never a time where the team approached me. Nothing like that." READ MORE>>
