The New England Patriots became the first NFL team to surpass one million followers on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, as the team continues to see exciting international interest and an expanding global fanbase.
Weibo, which translates to "microblog" in English, has nearly 600 million monthly active users and 252 million average daily active users. The Patriots have long had an active following in China and have been atop Weibo's leaders in total engagement for the past five years among NFL teams.
The Patriots were also the first team to surpass 500,000 followers on Weibo after record-breaking growth in 2019, when NFL commissioner Roger Goodell highlighted China as a "priority market" in the days before New England defeated the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 53 for their sixth championship.
"China represents a strategic and important market for the Patriots and we're delighted to see our commitment delivering positive results and a growing core fanbase," said Fred Kirsch, vice president of content and publisher for the Patriots, at the time.
Those positive results and growth have continued into 2024 and have maintained the Patriots place atop the NFL's most popular teams in China.
