FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots waived rookie safety Sam Smith today.

Smith, 23, was signed by the Patriots as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 8, 2006. He participated in New England's rookie mini-camp last weekend. The 6-foot, 200-pound safety attended Delaware State, where he led his conference and placed third in Division I-AA with 13.5 sacks as a senior in 2005.
