NEW ORLEANS (April 1, 2005) -- Antowain Smith, who has rushed for over 6,000 yards in the past eight years, agreed to a one-year contract with the New Orleans Saints.
Smith, who has led his team in rushing five times, rushed for 6,222 yards and 51 touchdowns, including two 100-yard seasons, in his eight-year career. He will back up Deuce McAllister.
The 33-year-old Smith, 6-foot-2, 232 pounds, has started 68 of 115 games in his career. He spent last season with the Tennessee Titans, where he had 509 yards on 137 carries and four touchdowns and 22 receptions.
Smith was with the New England Patriots from 2001-03, winning Super Bowl rings twice. In the 2002 game, he rushed for a 92 yards on 18 carries.
