According to ESPN, the Patriots are hosting free agent defensive end Will Smith.
Smith is a former first-round pick and veteran of 10 NFL seasons, although he missed all of 2013 with a torn ACL. The 6-3, 282 pounder had otherwise been pretty healthy in his career, playing all 16 games six times and at least 14 games three other times. He has 67.5 career sacks, including a career-high 13 in 2009. But he hasn't had more than six in a year since then.
Smith could potentially add veteran depth to a thin defensive end depth chart in New England that includes starters Chandler Jones and Rob Ninkovich, second-year backup Michael Buchanan, little-used third-year player Jake Bequette and not much else.
Smith was cut by New Orleans in February. He had been set to earn $11.5 million this season in the final season of his contract.
