Bill Belichick Postgame Press Conference Transcript

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick addresses the media during his postgame press conference at Heinz Field on Sunday, October 30, 2011.

Coach Bill Belichick: It was obviously a disappointing game.  I give the Steelers credit.  They played well; they did a better job than we did today.  They just outplayed us, outcoached us. They did a good job.  We've got to get back to work and play better than that going forward.  It just wasn't a really good day for us in any phase of the game, in any area.  We just didn't do a good enough job.  That's really all there is to say.

RE: Struggle with the pass defense
Giving up too many third downs.  That was a big problem.  If we would have made some more plays on third down, we wouldn't be talking about some of the other plays.

RE: Letting go three veterans this season
We make the decisions we feel like are best for the team.  That's what every decision is.

RE: On-side kick
It wasn't very good.  We got called for off-sides.  The ball didn't go 10 yards.  It's obviously not what we were trying to do.

What was the strategy behind the on-side kick?
We had confidence in the play.  We thought we would execute it well and give us a chance to get the ball.  It obviously didn't work out.

Tom Brady has had great success in Pittsburgh in the past.  What happened today?
Pittsburgh did a good job today.  I give them credit.

Are you concerned with the pass defense based on the number of passing yards you gave up today?
We had to do a better job in every area.  Based on today, we need to play better offense, we need to play better defense, we need to play better special teams.  We need to coach better, we need to play better.  It just wasn't our best effort today.  I'm not questioning the effort, it wasn't very good execution.  We just couldn't get it done.

RE: Replacing Antwaun Molden
We do what we think is best every week.  Whatever we think gives us the best chance to win. That's what we've always done. That's what we'll continue to do, whatever is best for the team.

RE: Change in personnel
We will find out every week.

RE: Trouble with pass-rush and secondary
We definitely need to do a better job than we did.  We had trouble all the way through.

Did you have a plan to challenge Ben Roethlisberger today?
We came in with our game plan.  We hit him sometimes and there were plenty of times we didn't.  He had a good day.  He threw the ball well to his receivers and made good plays.

Did you consider challenging the Rob Gronkowski catch?
I thought about it, but there was no evidence to challenge it.  I certainly couldn't see it from my angle and they replayed the play in the box.  There was nothing to tell us.

RE: Kevin Faulk returning
It's good to have him back, but I think we have to do a lot better job as a team offensively, defensively and on special teams, and that's obvious.  That includes everybody.
