Foxborough, Mass. - Following a 36-28 victory at Charlestown on Friday night, which allowed Boston English/New Mission to maintain their perfect 6-0 record on the year, head coach Ryan Conway has been named this week's New England Patriots High School Coach of the Week. Under Conway's leadership, Boston English/New Mission won the Boston City League South championship in the first year of the co-op football team.
Boston English/New Mission shot out to an early 22-6 lead in the second quarter after an 80-yard fumble recovery for a score by junior Eric Mack. Charlestown rallied to cut the game to 28-20 in the third, but Boston English/New Mission forced four total turnovers and kept the Townies out of the end zone in the fourth quarter to secure the 36-28 victory. Junior running back Takahri Hobbs got the scoring started for Boston English/New Mission after an 80-yard score and finished the night with 142 yards on just 10 carries. Senior wide receiver Raymonte Williams also had a strong showing, catching touchdown passes of 27 and 15 yards in the victory. With the win, Boston English/New Mission improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Boston City League South to lock up the league title. They will host Matignon/St. Joseph Prep in the first round of the MIAA Division 8 playoffs Friday at 6 p.m.
Patriots and Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Andre Tippett, now the team's executive director of community affairs, visited the Boston English/New Mission players and coaching staff Tuesday afternoon to present the football program with a $1,000 donation on behalf of the New England Patriots Foundation, in honor of Coach Conway. The visit and check presentation will be featured on the Patriots weekly television show, "Patriots All Access," which airs on Friday night at 7 p.m. on WBZ-TV in Boston and will be available immediately after on Patriots.com.
This is the 23rd year in which the Patriots have joined the National Football League in conducting the High School Coach of the Week program, which recognizes outstanding high school coaches and promotes youth football throughout New England. The 2018 season marks the eighth year that Tippett has taken the award on the road to visit the schools that benefit from the program.
"What a great victory for Coach Conway and the Boston English/New Mission football program in the win at Charlestown," Tippett said. "Congratulations to the team for clinching the league championship in its first year together and we wish them luck in their playoff game against Matignon/St. Joseph Prep."
At the conclusion of the fall, one of the weekly winners will be named the New England Patriots High School Coach of the Year and will receive an additional $2,000 contribution towards the school's football program.
For the eighth straight year, the Patriots will also be accepting nominations for High School Coach of the Week honors. Those who wish to nominate a high school football coach in New England who leads a team to an exceptional weekly performance or reaches a personal career milestone is encouraged to send submissions to nominatecoach@patriots.com. All nominations must be submitted following a team's Friday night or Saturday afternoon game to be considered for that week's Coach of the Week award.
