HEAD COACH JEROD MAYO

Postgame Press Conference
Thursday, September 19, 2024

On tonight's performance…
Look, not good at any phase of the game. Felt like we had a good game, x's and o's wise we just didn't go out there and execute and that's what it comes down to every Sunday. I told the guys this is NFL football. This is what it is, and we just have to be better, so the guys will be off the next few days, told them to get their minds right, get their bodies right and then come back and be ready to work. Bonus Monday, got another good team that we're going to go against next week, just have to be better.

On the offensive line...
Well, I thought the offensive line today had a hard time, had a hard time. There were times earlier in the game where the pockets looked pretty clean but as the game wore on, similar to last week, started falling apart as far as the protection. It's not only knowing how to do it, it's also knowing what to do. I'll also say we had some injuries up front that, you know, the next man has to be ready to go.

On if it was a mental or physical breakdown tonight...
Look, the first thing I have to look at myself in the mirror. Make sure I did everything that I could to get the guys ready to go. Based on the score today, I needed to do more, but going back to what I said earlier, just have to set the reset button, this is NFL football, and we have to get better.

On the decision to get Drake Maye into the game...
I just thought it was an opportunity, a good opportunity for him to go out there with the ones and put a few drives together, move the ball. We'll watch the film and evaluate.

On if the offensive line's performance gave him any pause for putting Maye in...
Well, like I said in the second half I felt like our offensive line, they just weren't blocking the way they did at earlier parts of the game. It definitely was something that I thought of personally, but at the same time I thought it was too good of an opportunity for him to get out there and get some experience.

On if they were too concerned with getting the ball to playmakers...
I wouldn't say that. We'll go back and look at the calls. What I will say is, some of those players are called from the huddle and others, you know, the quarterback has the ability to check when on passing. Look, I mean what did we had 100 yards in the first half? None of it was good run, pass.

On 14 missed tackles...
Yeah, very uncharacteristic. It's one of the things I'm very disappointed in, you know, as a defensive minded coach. Especially the second level we struggled all day as far as tackling. Once again, even when we tackled, we hit them in the backfield, just the lack of fundamentals, the lack discipline and the lack of just execution definitely continued to show up. That was very uncharacteristic for us, but once again you only get one opportunity to go out there and perform.

On Jacoby Brissett being sacked 25 times in the first three games and his level of concern...
The quarterback touches the ball every play, we have to do better up front. We have to, you know, whether it's through scheme or whatever we have to reevaluate. The good thing is it's Thursday, so it's a mini bye week where we as coaches can also reset and look at things that we can do better.

On what it says about Brissett getting back up no matter what...
It means a lot. It means a lot for a guy to continue to get up, toughness is always a huge piece of the puzzle for the quarterback position, but we just have to do better as a team.

On if there's a possibility for a (quarterback) change...
Uhm, I don't know. We talk about it every single week that you're competing for a job so, we'll get together as a coaching staff and see where it goes.

On how much they missed LB Ja'Whaun Bentley...
I mean, I don't want to deal with hypotheticals, but Bentley is a huge piece of the defense, communication, tackling, physicality, all of those things. But I have faith in those other guys. I have faith in (LB) Raekwon (McMillan), I have faith in (LB) Jahlani (Tavai) and the rest of those guys to get better. It's a learning experience but once again we have to learn from this loss and get better. Bentley is not coming back any time soon.

On Aaron Rodgers' performance...
Yeah, he was getting the ball out fast. I was saying one of the more disappointing things was that we talked about at nauseum, was keeping him in the pocket and I felt like at too many times we let him out of the pocket and this is a guy that can make all the throws.

On whose decision it was to put Maye into the game...
That's my decision.

On not containing Rodgers in the pocket...
It's a lack of discipline, it's a lack of execution. I wish I could sit here and say, 'Well, these are things that showed up,' but they haven't. What I will say is that there have been little things, not little things but big things that happened last game that continued to show up today and we have to get those corrected and that starts with me.

On his concern for the offensive line's pass protection...
Look, we just got beat pretty handedly and I'd say right now everything is of concern. The offensive line, you want those guys to be able to go out there as a unit and gel together but whether it's through injury or through whatever it is, we just haven't found the right combination.

On not being competitive enough tonight...
I'll say controlling the line of scrimmage. Not to sound like a broken record, but the last few games I told you guys I thought we did a good job controlling the line of scrimmage and being a tough football team, we just didn't show that today in any phase of the game.

On what needs to happen to get ready to beat the San Francisco 49ers...
We'll watch the film like I said. Before we'll do a self-scout to see where we are, but once again, it comes back to fundamentals. I hate to keep saying that, that's what it is, and so we can sit there and talk about we should do this, we should do that, no. It's blocking, it's tackling, it's throwing, it's catching, it's running it's all those things that we just didn't do.

QUARTERBACK JACOBY BRISSETT

Postgame Press Conference
Thursday, September 19, 2024

On the Patriots offense…
Yeah, it honestly just wasn't our night, you know, I don't think we really did anything well to be honest with you. So, hats off to the defense. You know, their defense had a hell of a plan for us. You know, we got a long weekend and look at the film and, you know, regroup and recalibrate and steer the ship right. I said ship, not any curse. So steer the ship right going forward.

On being sacked five times and hit 10 times…
I mean, I'm big man, I can take it. I'm always going to get back up. You know, that's one thing about me. I'm always going to get back up, you know, and find ways to make plays, man, that's what it comes down to. You know, it's football. I'm supposed to get hit, you know, I didn't sign up for this sport to not get hit, so I don't really pay attention to that.

On the Jets plan on defense…
Yeah, I think they just had our number. When we're in clear passing situations, you know, they were obviously teeing off and things like that. But it'll be interesting to go back and see the film and see what they tried to accomplish coming out and see what we can do. Because we play them again, they're in our division, so we've got to get ready for them again.

On trying to take shots down the field…
Yeah, I mean, we tried, we tried to throw the ball down the field, right? Got a PI on one, missed [TE Austin] Hooper on one. But we tried to get the ball down the field. I just think that it really came down to - we didn't execute well tonight. I think that falls back on me, obviously, as the quarterback, so got to find ways to get better at that.

On how the coaches told him QB Drake Maye would play the last series and how he felt about it…
Told me he's going in. I don't know what you want me to say. Yeah, he just told me he's going in.

On head coach Jerod Mayo saying he doesn't know what they will do moving forward and if he feels like it's still his job…
Of course. I mean, I don't make personnel decisions. My job is to go out there, get ready to play, put good football on tape and put my best foot forward.

On whether the Jets devoted more resources to stopping the run or if it was situational…
I think a mixture of both. You know, we got to a point where we were like, we need to throw the ball. No, I think obviously, early in the game, I think on one our first runs, they got us pretty good on one of the runs that we had. But other than that, it was just situation. And then, pretty much that, yeah.

On whether he thought his forward progress was stopped on his run in the second quarter…
Yeah, but I mean, they're trying to protect me, so that's why they [stopped the play].

On how often they had to change the play call at the line of scrimmage…
A mixture, I mean, like I said it, it really didn't come down to the plays. It was just, they just beat our ass, to be honest with you.

On whether he thought there were other throws that he could have made but wasn't able to…
I don't know. We'll see.

On what needs to happen with the offense in the next 10 days…
We've got to get our energy back. I think that's one. Obviously, attention to detail and focus is another thing. And it'll be a good time for us to reflect and see what we're good at, what we need to do better at and then, I mean it's early in the season. It's only the third game, so we've got a long season ahead. So it's just a matter of how we respond to, like you said, these 10 days, and then we get back to work on Monday.

On how challenging the changes on the offensive line have been…
Yeah. I mean, it's definitely tough. Those guys, they're battling their ass off, man. And I tip my hat to him. It's not an easy job. Honestly, I don't want that job. But I respect those guys for going out there and just trying their best, and that's all you can ask for, man. It's just, give me your best. I'm gonna give them my best and at the end of the day, we'll see where we're at.

On how he feels about a possible change at quarterback…
I'm not going to overreact to something that I didn't hear.

QUARTERBACK DRAKE MAYE

Thursday, September 19, 2024

Not transcribed by opposing team.

Keion White, DE

On having an improvement mindset going into the weekend…
Yeah, and I expect that to be the mindset of everybody on the team. 1-and-2. That's unacceptable. Losing is not to be tolerated, so we just need to go to the drawing board and see what we've done over the last two games, because we have San Francisco (49ers) who's a really good team coming up next.

On areas of improvement in his performance tonight…
Everything. Missed tackles, I did that. Let the quarterback out of the pocket, I did that. Not putting my hands at times, everything that you could do, I think I did tonight. I think I just need to improve everything.

DeMario Douglas, WR

On Jacoby Brissett's performance...
That's a soldier right there. Taking hits and getting up, he's going out there fired up. That's the definition of a soldier right there. They get up and they push through the hard times.

On Drake Maye's NFL debut...
It was good seeing him out there getting the feel of a regular season game.

On how Drake Maye performed in practice...
He's been good. He's been doing what he's supposed to be doing.

Jahlani Tavai, LB

On the defensive performance tonight…
We were just not sticking to our fundamentals. There were a lot of missed tackles, myself included. That's just not us. Hats off to the Jets right now, they definitely beat us tonight. We got to regroup during this weekend and get back to what we do.

On what makes Aaron Rodgers tough to defend…
He's Rodgers, that's who he is, we knew that going into this game that regardless of his age he's still the same guy, he can still make the throws and the adjustments. Like I said, we didn't do well with our fundamentals. You saw there was a little sloppy play on our part and we have to regroup and get ready for next week.

On if the lapse of defensive fundamentals correlated to having a shorter week to prepare…
There's no excuse. This is a performance-based game, we are professionals and we have to show up and play regardless. There's no excuse for what we did, right now it's another one we got to take and we're onto the next.

Jabrill Peppers, S

On how tough this loss was…
Divisional game. Primetime. We came out and got our (explicit) kicked. Plain and simple.

On what happened to him on the play he visited the medical tent…
I wasn't really concerned. I knew I probably sprained it a little bit. I got leg whipped so I just wanted to get a little tape on there because I just had the spat on where I thought it was supposed to be. Then I went in here because I had little cramps. A little more healing than expected but it is what it is, I came back out and finished the game.

On the defense's performance being "uncharacteristic" because of Aaron Rodgers…
It's a combination of both. Plain and simple we just didn't play well enough or play well at all to be honest with you. Too many missed tackles, missed assignments, lack of hustle at times. It's just too uncharacteristic of us. Man to man we know we have to play better on all facets of the ball but especially on defense.

David Andrews, C

On his postgame thoughts…
It was bad in all phases, we didn't play the game like how we wanted to play. It wasn't what we wanted to do, hats off to them, they had a good plan. They played a lot better than we did tonight, flat out simple.

On what specifically the Jets defense did to create struggles for the offensive line…
Obviously, they have really good players, I don't think it was anything we weren't prepared for but a team like that, when you're getting behind on the chains, is not how you want to play those games. We weren't really able to get into a rhythm and some things we thought were going to work didn't, we didn't execute it good enough. It's hard to play the game against a team like that with a really good quarterback, good offense and a good defense. It's hard to play from behind, we sure did that today.

On continuing to grow as an offensive line despite recent player shifts…
We have to get better. Look, it's a race to get better every week. Look, it's early in the year, there's a lot of football left to be played and it'll be bad if we don't learn from this. Try to take the good and try to fix the bad and that's what we'll try to do. Get some rest, try to keep people healthy over these next couple of days and be ready to go for the next whatever stretch it is.
