Panthers WR Smith hopeful to be ready for opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith is hopeful to be recovered from a right shoulder injury to play in the regular-season opener.
The four-time Pro Bowl pick spoke to reporters Tuesday wearing a sling, the day after he was hurt after hitting the ground hard following a collision with cornerback Chris Gamble at practice.
X-rays were negative, but Smith declined to say if he had a separated shoulder or if he'll undergo an MRI. He did not give a timetable for his return, but said he was optimistic he'd be ready for the season opener Sept. 13 against Philadelphia.
Smith has a history of shoulder trouble dating to a 2007 game against Dallas. He was injured in a preseason contest against Washington last season, but did not miss any games.
