FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Patriots announced today that they have acquired G Ryan Groy in a trade with the Chicago Bears in exchange for 2015 sixth-round draft pick LB Matthew Wells.
Groy, 24, originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Chicago Bears on May 11, 2014. The 6-foot-5, 320-pounder, was released by Chicago at the end of training camp and began his rookie season on the Chicago practice squad. He was signed to the Chicago 53-man roster from the practice squad on Nov. 10, 2014, and played in the final four games of the season, including starts at left guard in the final three games of the year.
Wells, 24, was selected by the Patriots in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft with the 178th selection overall out of Mississippi State. The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder, played in 52 games with 33 starts in his college career and recorded 165 tackles, six sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Last season, Wells started all 13 games at outside linebacker and finished with 45 tackles and four sacks.Â
