With veterans set to return to Foxborough Monday for the start of the club's offseason conditioning program, the Patriots hired a new speed consultant.
Tom Shaw has been added to the staff on a part-time basis and will work with Patriots players from April-June or what amounts to the length of the offseason program, which generally "requires" about 40 supervised workouts by each player.
Technically, the workout program is voluntary, but players are encouraged to attend and many even have bonuses in their contracts for full participation.
Shaw is a noted speed coach who has worked with the likes of Deion Sanders and Eric Moulds among others. In fact, Patriots running back Robert Edwards spent time with Shaw in New Orleans last year working on his speed as he recovers from reconstructive knee surgery.
Shaw also worked with Patriots strength and conditioning coach Mike Woicik training New Orleans Saints players when Woicik held the same position with the NFC West franchise.
