FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots announced today the club has re-signed veteran LB Tracy White. In addition, the Patriots signed veteran S Steve Gregory as an unrestricted free agent from San Diego. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
White, 30, is a veteran of 10 NFL seasons with the Seattle Seahawks (2003-04), Jacksonville Jaguars (2005), Green Bay Packers (2006-2008), Philadelphia Eagles (2008-2009) and the Patriots (2010-11).
The 6-0, 230 pound linebacker was originally signed by Seattle as a rookie free agent out of Howard in 2003. White came to New England in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 5, 2010. The Patriots acquired White and a 2012 seventh-round draft pick from the Eagles in exchange for a 2012 sixth-round pick. (The Patriots traded the seventh-round pick obtained in the White trade to Minnesota along with WR Randy Moss for a 2011 third-round pick (74th overall - used to select Ryan Mallett) on Oct. 6, 2010).
A standout special teams player throughout his career, White has been a leading special teams performer for the Patriots over the last two season, finishing second on the team in 2010 with 18 special teams tackles and second in 2011 with 14 special teams tackles.
Last season, White played in 15 games with one start and finished the season with 25 tackles, 1 pass defensed and 14 special teams tackles. He also played in all three postseason games, including a start in Super Bowl XLVI.
Gregory, 29, is a veteran of six NFL seasons with the San Diego Chargers (2006-11). He originally joined the NFL as a rookie free agent with San Diego on May 8, 2006 out of Syracuse. The 5-11, 195- pounder has played in 85 NFL games with 31 starts and has accumulated 241 total tackles, 2.0 sacks, four interceptions with one that was returned for a touchdown in 2011, 17 passes defensed and three fumble recoveries.
Last season, Gregory played in 15 games with 13 starts at strong safety for the Chargers and finished the year with a career-high 67 total tackles, one interception that he returned 26 yards for a touchdown vs. Buffalo on Dec. 11 and three passes defensed.
