FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots signed former Brown University fullback Michael Malan.
Malan, 22, rushed for a school-record 3,266 yards, while averaging 5.4 yards per carry, and scored 39 rushing touchdowns in 29 games at Brown University. The 5-foot-11-inch, 235-pound fullback also caught 81 passes for 641 yards and 3 touchdowns during his career. His 252 career points ranks fourth in Ivy League history. Last year, he signed with the St. Louis Rams as a non-drafted rookie free agent on April 26, 2002, but was released on the team's final preseason roster reduction (9/1/02). He spent one week on the Rams' practice squad, but was released from the squad and remained out of football for the remainder of the 2002 season.
The St. Louis native lettered in football and track at Mary Institute Country Day School in St. Louis and was selected as a USA Today All-American as a defensive back. He also earned all-state honors in track, competing in the long jump and triple jump.
