FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots announced today the signing of first-round draft pick RB Sony Michel. Terms of the contract were not announced. In addition, the Patriots announced that OL Andrew Jelks has been placed on the reserve/retired list.
Michel, 23, was selected by the Patriots in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft with the 31st overall selection out of Georgia. The 5-foot-11, 215-pounder, finished his career third on Georgia's all-time rushing list with 3,688 yards. As a senior in 2017, he played in 14 games with two starts and finished with 1,227 yards on 156 carries (7.9 avg.). Michel was named one of the four team captains and earned co-offensive Most Valuable Player honors.
Jelks, 24, was originally signed by the Patriots as a rookie free agent out of Vanderbilt on May 5, 2017. The 6-foot-6, 305-pounder was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list prior to the start of the regular season. Jelks played in 24 games with 21 starts over his five seasons at Vanderbilt but missed his final two seasons in 2015 and 2016 due to injury.
