And Lloyd has had a very impressive training camp this summer as he works his way into the Patriots version of the Josh McDaniels offense he's had success with in the past.
But according to the numbers/metric guys of Football Outsiders over on the INSIDER page on ESPN.com Lloyd is among the game's overrated players. The FBO list comes from "players whose on-field performances don't match up with their ESPN Insider Big Book scouting rankings."
The Big Book is the ESPN Scouts Inc. ranking of the top 200 players in the NFL, as well as the top players at each position. Aaron Rodgers is the top player overall on the list, with Tom Brady second. Lloyd ranks as the 13th best receiver in the Big Book, just five spots behind new teammate Wes Welker.
Football Outsiders says Lloyd doesn't deserve such a high ranking, and explains its view as follows:
*"Without question, this is the strangest result of the Big Book rankings. In 2010, Lloyd was excellent, leading the league with 1,448 receiving yards and ranking second among receivers in both DVOA and DYAR. In each of his other eight NFL seasons, Lloyd has failed to gain 1,000 yards or rank in the top 50 in either of FO's metrics. In the past seven seasons, the 49ers, Redskins, Bears, Broncos and Rams have all let Lloyd go. These teams weren't dripping with excess wide-receiver talent, but none of them wanted Lloyd around.
"With the exception of one fluke year, Lloyd has never been very good, and after he turned 31 last month he should get even worse. He should be ranked lower than 13th at his position."*
It will be interesting to see what Lloyd can do in New England, joining an already impressive offensive attack and one of the top passers in the history of the game.
