ATHERTON, Calif. (Feb. 7, 2006) -- Jim Plunkett's son was arrested on sexual assault charges and accused of choking a woman in the home of the former star quarterback.
James Plunkett Jr., 22, was arrested on Feb. 4, two days after the alleged attack occurred, on suspicion of assault with intent to commit rape and inflicting injury, police said.
He was released later than night in lieu of $50,000 bail, police said. An arraignment is scheduled for March 13.
Police have not identified the woman or explained her relationship with Plunkett Jr. But his lawyer, Chuck Smith, told the San Jose Mercury News the two were dating and his client plans to fight the charges. Smith did not immediately return a phone call.
"The entire contact was consensual. Jimmy did not commit any crimes, and there was no sexual contact," Smith said.
Smith described the younger Plunkett as an Arizona State student who was in suburban San Francisco visiting his parents.
The elder Plunkett was a star at Stanford and later won a Super Bowl title with the Oakland Raiders.
