With some down time before training camp, we're inspecting the Patriots roster position by position. Today, an examination of the offensive line.
LOCKS: Joe Thuney, David Andrews, Shaq Mason, Marcus Cannon, Trent Brown, Isaiah Wynn
BUBBLE: LaAdrian Waddle, Ted Karras, Cole Croston, Matt Tobin, Ulrick John, Luke Bowanko
LONG SHOTS: Andrew Jelks, James FerentzÂ
BREAKDOWN: The competition at left tackle appears to be between Trent brown and rookie first-round pick Isaiah Wynn. Wynn also could move inside to guard depending on Thuney's (foot) health. But the rest of the line will remain intact from last year.
The battles for backup roles will be fierce. Waddle is a dependable swing tackle but will he be needed if Wynn earns the starting LT job? Karras figures to have the inside track at a backup role on the inside after serving in that capacity the last two seasons. Croston, Tobin, John and Bowanko all have NFL experience but not much as starters. Might only be room for one – at most
Jelks and Ferentz are likely on the outside looking in, but injuries can change things in a hurry.
