Media reports out of Tennessee Tuesday afternoon indicated that the Patriots had swung a trade with the Titans for OLB Akeem Ayers, just a week before the NFL trade deadline. The transaction is reportedly pending a physical examination of the player by the Patriots.
The 25-year-old Ayers (listed at 6-3, 255) was a second-round pick of Tennessee in 2011 and started all but five games for the Titans in his first three years, picking up nine sacks along the way. This season, however, he's only appeared in two games and underwent surgical procedures on both knees during the offseason.
New England certainly could use more help in the pass rush department, and acquiring Ayers would seem to provide at least some depth on the roster in that regard. It's unclear what New England gave Tennessee in exchange for Ayers.
