The Patriots made a huge splash in free agency by reportedly signing Darrelle Revis on Wednesday. Today there's news indicating they may lose a high-profile player as well.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Vince Wilfork has asked the Patriots to release him, according to sources. Rapoport tweeted the news around 2:15 p.m.
With a cap number set at $11.6 million for 2014, the sides have reportedly spoken about a restructure recently but have yet to reach an agreement. Evidently Wilfork wasn't happy with the proposals from the team, based on this reaction. The Patriots would save about $8 million on the cap by releasing the former Pro Bowl defensive tackle.
The 32-year-old Wilfork is set to enter his 11th season – all with New England – but was limited to just four games last year due to a rupture Achilles suffered in Atlanta. He's played in 138 of 144 games during his career.
