Carolina free agent receiver Brandon LaFell is scheduled to visit with the Patriots today, according to an ESPN report. LaFell would join Broncos free agent linebacker Wesley Woodyard, who is also reported to be paying a visit to Foxborough.
LaFell (6-2, 210) is a big-bodied receiver who can play both inside and out – the kind of versatility the Patriots absolutely love. The 27-year-old started all 16 games for the Panthers last season, catching 49 passes for 627 yards and 5 TDs. Those numbers are about average for him over his four-year NFL career, all in Carolina. The touchdowns, though, were the highest total of his pro career.
Woodyard, meantime, started 24 games at middle linebacker over the past two seasons in Denver. He's shorter and lighter (6-0, 233) than most players at the position, but with the expected departure of Brandon Spikes, the Patriots need to acquire depth at the linebacker spot.
