A day after the Patriots reportedly acquired Colts tight end Dwayne Allen, ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted the Patriots will sign cornerback Stephon Gilmore in free agency.
Many years the Patriots are content to let other teams make big splashes as the new league year kicks off. This is not one of those years.
The 27-year-old Gilmore was the 10th overall pick out of South Carolina in 2012 and spent his entire career with the Bills. The 6-0, 190-pound Gilmore made the Pro Bowl last season with Buffalo and had a career-high five interceptions last season. In his five seasons he has 14 picks in 68 career games, 66 of which were starts. He's missed 12 games due to injury in his career.
The deal cannot become official until 4 p.m. Thursday but NFL Network's Ian Rapoport tweeted the deal is expected to be worth more than $14 million per year.
UPDATE 4:08 P.M. Eastern
The aforementioned Schefter added details of Gilmore's contract with New England.
