DAVIE, Fla. (July 28, 2005) -- Former Pro Bowl safety Lance Schulters signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins six weeks after he was released by Tennessee for salary-cap reasons.
"Schulters is a veteran player in the secondary who we considered for a long, long time," Dolphins coach Nick Saban said. "It seemed to be in our best interest to sign him."
Schulters (6-foot-2, 202 pounds) played three seasons with Tennessee after spending four years with San Francisco, where he was a Pro Bowl performer in 1999. He was limited to three games in 2004 because of a foot injury.
Miami's two starting safeties last season, Sammy Knight and Arturo Freeman, now are with other teams. Schulters, who was also being pursued by Atlanta and Dallas, said Saban played a big role in his decision to sign with the Dolphins.
"I know from my first meeting he was intense, he knows exactly what he's doing," Schulters said. "He told me I'd have an opportunity to compete for a starting job."
