Wes Welker Postgame Press Conference Transcript

New England Patriots WR Wes Welker addresses the media during his postgame press conference at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, January 22, 2012.

Q: Has reality set in that you're going to the Super Bowl?

WW: A little bit. I don't know - you're just kind of shaking your head a little bit, but [I'm] definitely excited. It was a full team win and guys really stepped up and made some big plays, and that's what it's about and that's how we got to this position. Hopefully we keep on pulling through.

Q: Was there a little concern at all when you were down 20-16?

WW: I don't think you really look at it that way. You just go out there and try to play your game and try to move the ball and try to score. Luckily there at the end we were able to do that and our defense just came up huge for us from then on.

Q: What is it about this team? Ten wins in a row... you guys keep grinding out -

WW: I think we're a pretty mentally tough team. We don't ever really get down or get too high or too low or anything like that. We just try to stay steady and understand that we need to make plays, and no matter what the circumstance or what happens out there, we're in it together and that's how we're going to win games.

Q: Did you think this game was headed to go into overtime?

WW: We've still got to make the plays and Sterling [Moore] made a heck of a play there on that third down and I thought they were going to go for it then they kicked the field goal and it was really crazy. It's tough being on the sidelines during that moment and just kind of pacing back and forth.

Q: You and a couple other veterans spoke earlier this week about ceasing the moment and the opportunity to get to these games and that AFC Championship games don't come around all that often. How do you think you and the rest of your teammates played when the moment was presented today?

WW: I think there were some tough scenarios that we didn't do very well on and then there were some scenarios that we did well on and [Baltimore] has a good defense and are a good team and they have players that can go out there and make those plays and do some things out there just like us trying to make those plays. I wouldn't say it was our best effort, especially offensively. We left a lot of plays out there that we need to take care of and clean up and be better at for this next game.

Q: You've been through this before, what would you tell a rookie or a young guy who hasn't been through this circus before about what to do in terms of taking care yourself?

WW: Don't get caught up in the show of everything. It's a business trip and that's all it is. It's not a party. It's not anything else. It's going out there and trying to win the Super Bowl and that's objective number one and nothing else needs to get in the way of that.

Q: It's that easy to do with this group?

WW: I think we've got a bunch of levelheaded guys and a bunch of guys that understand that and understand that we've come a long way and for just focusing for two weeks… then we can let lose after that.

Q: Does the mustache continue?

WW: How do you stop it now? [It] can't be contained at this point, so yeah, we've got to keep it moving.
