Bill Belichick Postgame Press Conference Transcript

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick addresses the media during his postgame press conference at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, December 4, 2011.

BB:It's good to be 9-3. I think we put our team in a decent position here. Hopefully we can keep improving here through the last quarter of the season. I thought we did some good things out there today. We've obviously got to do a better job of finishing the game. That was disappointing, but we'll work on that. We'll get back to work here and get ready for Washington next week.

Q:Can you talk about the mindset of your team this week and taking the Colts seriously, and then jumping out to such a big lead?

BB:I think we did some good things today. There are other things we didn't do as well. That's the way it is every week.

Q:What went into you having so many players at unfamiliar positions to start the game like Matthew Slater at safety?

BB:We tried to put the best people out there we could to be competitive; it's the same thing we do every week.

Q:So Matthew Slater is now a better safety?

BB:We felt like that was the best thing we could do to win.

Q:The hurry up offense seemed to change the complexion of the game. What went into that decision?

BB:We use it every week. We've used it every week, so I'm sure we'll keep using it. There are some advantages to using it and there are some disadvantages to using it, but it's part of our offense, so we use it. [We do] whatever we feel is best.

Q:It seemed to be more effective than usual, scoring 21 points like that.

BB:That's why we stayed in it.

Q:It seemed Nate Jones got a good number of snaps for a guy you just signed. What were your thoughts on his play?

BB:I'd have to look at it on film. It looked like he made a few plays, but I don't know. I can't watch them all. We'll watch it on film and see how it looks. I'm sure he did some good things; I'm sure there are some other things that he can improve on.

Q:Did you notice center Nick McDonald today?

BB:Yeah. I'd say the same thing. I think Nick stepped in and did a good job, did some good things. There are some other things that, I'm sure, with experience he'll do better next time.

Q:With all the new bodies on defense, was the communication okay today?

BB:We had our moments. There were times when it was good. There are probably some times when it could have been better.

Q:You featured Rob Gronkowski quite a bit today. Was that a primary part of the plan or was that just the opportunities that were there?

BB:He wasn't covered, so Tom threw it to him. Tom's not going to pass up an open receiver. We didn't know he was going to be open.

Q:Did you hear about the official scoring change? His touchdown was changed to a lateral, so he didn't actually break the NFL record to receiving touchdowns by a tight end in one season.

BB:No.

Q:Did you know that he was close to that record?

BB:I was really trying to be concerned about beating the Colts. I wasn't really concerned about individual stats. I think I've said that many, many times. This game isn't about individual stats; it's about team wins.
