FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Mansfield High School's Mike Redding has been named the New England Patriots High School Coach of the Year for winning the 2003 Division 3 Super Bowl Championship during an undefeated season.
The Green Hornets went 13-0 this year and Redding has accumulated a 117-49-3 record (.750 winning percentage) in his 16 years as their head football coach.
Redding is a 1979 graduate of North Attleboro High School, where he was a National Honor Society student. He lettered in four sports, football (4 years), basketball (4 years), baseball (3 years), track (1 year). In football, he finished his high school career with 132 receptions for 2,346 yards and 22 touchdowns. He was all-state three years, and was chosen to the National Football Foundation as one of 10 student-athletes in Massachusetts. Redding went on to play collegiate football at Holy Cross and earn a master's degree from Brown University. After finishing at Brown, he became a social studies teacher and football coach at Mansfield High School.
The New England Patriots Charitable Foundation will donate $2,000 to the Mansfield High School's Football Program in Redding's name in recognition of his selection as Coach of the Year.
The Patriots High School Coach of the Week is selected by a panel including representatives of the Patriots and WCVB Channel 5, which airs the team's weekly magazine show, Patriots All Access, on Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. WCVB sports anchor Mike Lynch is the host of the show. Lynch and Andre Tippett, a Patriots Hall of Fame member and the Patriots Football Development and Promotions Director, will present Redding with the Coach of the Year honors on this week's show.
