News Blitz 3/19: Armond Armstead reportedly on pace for April OTAs

The Patriots.com News Blitz gets you up-to-date on the latest Patriots news from local and national media.

[

Jeff Howe](http://bostonherald.com/sports/patriotsnfl/newenglandpatriots/2014/03/patriotsnotebookarmondarmsteadmaybeinline_to) of the Boston Herald reports that Patriots DL Armond Armstead is on pace to be ready to participate in the team's offseason program which kicks off on April 21. The 23-year-old missed all of last season after having surgery to treat an undisclosed infection.

"Armstead, who turns 24 in August, said the NFL's advisory board gave him a second- or third-round grade if he left school after his junior year," notes Howe. "He also has the positional versatility to play anywhere along the line except nose tackle, but the Patriots are thin in the middle." READ MORE>>

Ben Volin of the Boston Globe believes Josh Boyce and Kenbrell Thompkins will be competing for the No. 5 receiver spot in 2014 behind Julian Edelman, Aaron Dobson, Danny Amendola and Brandon LaFell.

"Even by bringing Edelman back and adding LaFell, the Patriots probably aren't done adding bodies at receiver," writes Volin. "They still brought in former Titan Kenny Britt for a visit on Monday, a source told the Globe, and have checked out names such as Jason Avant and Lance Moore in the past week." READ MORE>>

Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com believes that free agent DE Jared Allen's market could be "too rich" for the Patriots.

"Another player who caught my eye who I think could be interesting on a one-year deal is Dolphins safety Chris Clemons," writes Reiss. "I'm also keeping tabs on the interior offensive line market and could envision a signing there, possibly bringing Ryan Wendell back." READ MORE>>

Chad Finn](http://www.boston.com/sports/touchingallthebases/2014/03/gradingthepatriotsoffseasonsofar.html) of the Boston Globe grades all of the Patriots offseason moves so far, and gives the Darrelle Revis signing an A .

"He's a game-changing playmaker, the rare defender whose mere presence makes the other 10 teammates on the field better," writes Finn. "Circumstantial bonus: it made fools of those whining after one day of free agency that the Patriots weren't doing anything substantial. Wrong. Embarrassingly so." READ MORE>>

Doug Kyed of NESN.com thinks that New England is a "very unlikely landing spot" for Eagles WR DeSean Jackson.

"There has been some speculation that the Patriots could fit Jackson, Edelman and LaFell into the offense at once by trading slot recevier Danny Amendola as part of a package for Jackson," writes Kyed. "That's extremely implausible since it wouldn't even save the Patriots cap room. Also, trades for one player are unlikely. Trades involving two players are even more improbable." READ MORE>>
