News Blitz 3/5: Source says Aqib Talib wants 'top of market' cornerback money

The Patriots.com News Blitz gets you up-to-date on the latest Patriots news from local and national media.

Jeff Howe](http://bostonherald.com/sports/patriotsnfl/newenglandpatriots/2014/03/sourceaqibtalibwantstopofthemarket_deal)* of the *Boston Herald reports that Patriots CB Aqib Talib wants to be paid as a top-of-the-market cornerback in free agency this offseason, according to a source.

"Since the Dolphins signed Brent Grimes to a four-year, $32 million contract, including $16 million guaranteed, that baseline for this class of prized free agents has been established," writes Howe.

"With that in mind, it seems unlikely the Patriots could keep Talib from free agency with an offer of anything short of Grimes' neighborhood." READ MORE>>

Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com would be "surprised" if the Patriots make an aggressive push to sign Broncos free agent WR Eric Decker this offseason. He believes Decker's performance in the Super Bowl raised questions about paying the 26-year-old wideout big money.

"When I think of free-agent receivers, I'd look in the lower price range toward the likes of Emmanuel Sanders (Steelers), Jacoby Jones (Ravens), Dexter McCluster (Chiefs), Kenny Britt (Titans), Tiquan Underwood (Buccaneers) and Austin Collie (Patriots) as more likely possibilities," adds Reiss. Tom E. Curran of CSNNE.com shares his tight end free agent preview and looks at top players available at the position including the Texans' Garrett Graham.

"Already re-signed has been Dennis Pitta. Jimmy Graham's been franchised by the Saints. The cupboard isn't bare but it's not too enticing either," writes Curran. "Graham is the only play here that jumps out and makes a modicum of sense. Just re-sign Michael Hoomanawanui and wait for the draft." READ MORE>>

Doug Kyed of NESN.com believes Red Bryant and Arthur Jones are among the free agent defensive tackles that the Patriots could sign.

"Bryant has long been linked to the Patriots, who showed interest in the 323-pound defensive lineman before he signed a five-year, $35 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks in 2012," writes Kyed. "He was cut on Friday and could link back up with the Patriots." READ MORE>>

Jerry Spar of WEEI.com writes about Mike Florio's appearance on the Mut & Merloni radio show yesterday. The ProFootballTalk.com writer believes the Patriots might be better off passing on Aqib Talib and making a run at trading for Buccaneers CB Darrelle Revis.

"When you think about what it's going to cost to keep Talib on a long-term deal, what the costs are from an off-field risk standpoint, it's very easy to get yourself to the point where you can justify making a run at Revis," said Florio. "And you throw in the icing on the cake of sticking it to the Jets. Because one of the reasons the Jets traded Revis last year was to get him out of situation where he could walk out the door and sign with the Patriots as a free agent this year." READ MORE>>
