FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots announced today that they have activated RB Rex Burkhead to the 53-man roster and released OL Matt Tobin. Burkhead was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 26 after he played in three games with two starts and registered 24 rushing attempts for 86 yards and caught three passes for 31 yards. Tobin was signed to the 53-man roster on Nov. 7 and was inactive for two games.
Tobin, 28, went to training camp with New England this past summer after signing with the team as an unrestricted free agent from Seattle on March 17, 2018. After being released by New England prior to the start of the regular season, he was signed by the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 3, 2018, and was inactive for two games before being released on Sept. 19. The 6-foot-6, 310-pounder played four seasons in Philadelphia (2013-16) and one in Seattle (2017). Tobin originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia out of Iowa in 2013. He was traded from Philadelphia to Seattle last August. Tobin has played in 57 NFL games with 21 starts.
