DRAFTING:
The 2012 NFL Draft will consist of seven rounds with a total of 253 picks. Each team is assigned one pick per round based on the reverse order of finish of the 2011 season. In addition, a total of 32 compensatory choices were awarded. New England holds 6 total picks.

1A - The Patriots acquired New Orleans' 2012 first round pick and their 2011 second round pick (56th overall that was used to select RB Shane Vereen) during a 2011 draft day trade on April 28,, 2011 in exchange for the Patriots 2011 first-round pick (28th overall).
2A - The Patriots acquired Oakland's 2012 second-round pick and a 2011 seventh-round pick (219th overall that was used to select DB Malcolm Williams) on a 2011 draft day trade on April 29, 2011 in exchange for the Patriots 2011 third-round pick (92nd overall) and a 2011 fourth-round pick (125th overall).
5 - The Patriots are without a fifth-round pick in 2012 due to a trade with Cincinnati. The Patriots traded a fifth round pick in 2012 and a sixth-round pick in 2013 in exchange for WR Chad Ochocinco on July 29, 2011.
6 - The Patriots are without a sixth-round pick in 2012 due to a trade with Philadelphia in exchange for LB Tracy White and a 2012 seventh-round pick on Sept. 5, 2010. The Patriots traded the seventh-round pick obtained in the Tracy White trade to Minnesota along with WR Randy Moss for a 2011 third-round pick (74th overall - used to select Ryan Mallett) on Oct. 6, 2010.

NFL DRAFT FACTS
DRAFT ORDER
The NFL's 2012 draft order was derived from the reverse order of 2011 regular season records, with the exception of the Super Bowl champion, the Super Bowl runner-up and the playoff teams. Teams that made the playoffs are ordered by which round of the playoffs they are eliminated. Teams that did not make the playoffs are ordered by their regular-season record. For teams with identical records, the tiebreaker is strength of schedule, with the team with the lowest strength of schedule drafting first. The final tiebreaker is a coin flip. ROUND-BY-ROUND ROTATION
The draft order of teams with identical records will rotate by round, with the exception of the Super Bowl champion and the Super Bowl runner-up, which will draft last and next-to-last in each round. Teams involved in two-team ties will alternate positions from round to round. In ties that involve three or more teams, the team at the bottom of the tied segment in a given round will move to the top of the segment for the next round, while all other teams in the segment move down one position. This rotation continues throughout the draft. PASSING
If a team does not make a pick during its allotted time period, the team "passes" and the pick will defer to the next team. The initial team may then at any point make a pick, regardless of whether or not the subsequent team has made a pick.

HISTORY OF #27 PICK**
PATRIOTS AT #27: The Patriots have selected at No. 27 three times in team history, drafting CB Devin McCourty out of Rutgers in 2010, NT Lester Williams out of Miami (FL) in 1982 and DE Julius Adams from Texas Southern in 1971.
NOTABLE PICKS: QB Dan Marino was the first round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 1983, winning the Rookie of the Year award that year. He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, played in nine Pro Bowls, was named the 1984 NFL MVP and was a three-time All-Pro. He received the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 1998.
A YEAR AGO AT #27 - DB JIMMY SMITH
Last year, the Baltimore Ravens used the 27th pick to select DB Jimmy Smith from Colorado. He played in 12 games with three starts for the Ravens, registering 20 tackles, two interceptions and one fumble recovery.
HISTORY OF #31 PICK
PATRIOTS AT #31: The Patriots have used the 31st overall pick once in team history, drafting OLB Chris Slade from Virginia in 1993.
NOTABLE PICKS: TE Todd Heap was drafted by Baltimore in 2001 and after becoming the starting tight in 2002 produced two straight Pro Bowl seasons. CB Nnamdi Asomugha was drafted by Oakland in 2003 and has produced three Pro Bowl seasons (2008,09, 10). He joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011.
A YEAR AGO AT #31 - DE CAMERON HEYWARD
The Pittsburgh Steelers used the 31st pick to select DE Cameron Heyward from Ohio State. Heyward played in all 16 games, totaling 11 tackles, one sack, one pass defensed and one forced fumble.
HISTORY OF #48 PICK
PATRIOTS AT #48: The Patriots have used the 48th overall pick twice in team history, drafting T Matt Light out of Purdue in 2001 and DE Garin Veris from Stanford in 1985.
NOTABLE PICKS: C Dwight Stephenson was selected with the 48th pick by the Miami Dolphins in 1980. He went to five straight Pro Bowls and was inducted into the Pro Hall of Fame in 1998. DE Howie Long was selected with the 48th pick by the Oakland Raiders in 1981. An eight-time Pro Bowler and two-time First-Team All-Pro, he was inducted into the Pro Foortball Hall of Fame in 2000.
A YEAR AGO AT #48 - C STEFEN WISNIEWSKI
With the 48th overall pick in 2011 draft, the Oakland Raiders selected C Stefen Wisniewski from Penn State. Wisniewski started all 16 games at center for the Raiders.

PATRIOTS AT #62: The Patriots have selected at No. 62 two times in team history, selecting LB Brandon Spikes from Florida in 2010 and CB Terrence Wheatley from Colorado in 2008.
NOTABLE PICKS: Dallas selected Stanford WR Tony Hill with the 62nd pick in 1977. He was selected to three Pro Bowls (1978- 79, 1985).
A YEAR AGO AT #62 - RB DANIEL THOMAS
The Miami Dolphins selected running back Daniel Thomas out of Kansas State with the 62nd pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. Gilbert appeared in 13 games, finishing with 165 attempts for 581 yards and 12 receptions for 72 yards and one touchdown for the Dolphins in 2011.
