Patriots Postgame Quotes

New England Patriots players comment on their 7-6 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals at Gillette Stadium on Thursday, August 20, 2009.

Brandon Meriweather, Defensive Back
(On what the defense did well)

"You can take some positives from every game. Even games you lose 100 to nothing, you can take some positives from. You just want to take everything as a [stepping] stone and get better every day. We still have some things we need to do better. We still have a long way to go."

(On what he can improve on)

"I want to get better at reading the quarterback. I want to get better at tackling. I want to get better at all the little things like footwork. All the little things I do I want to get better at."

Joey Galloway, Wide Receiver(On how he did Thursday night overall)

"I'll watch the film and make my corrections from there. I won't know until I see it, though."

(On the Patriots' offense starting the game with four wide receivers on the field)

"It's a change of pace, for sure, something that we wanted to work on. Again, we'll have to watch the film to see where our mistakes were with that. We didn't put touchdowns on the board and that's our goal."

(On if he envisions the offense using that kind of formation during the regular season)

"That's a call that's made way above me, so I really don't know."

(On if he has a preference of playing inside or outside)

"No. My goal has always been to just be prepared for wherever they need me to be."

(On if he was more comfortable in his second game)

"A little bit. I think the more you play with guys, there's really no substitute for experience and getting out there together and getting in the huddle with these guys. So I think this time I was a little more comfortable and we'll build on it from here."

(On Tom Brady saying he wanted to get hit in a live game)

"Well he got hit, for sure (laughs). I don't know if that's what he had in mind, but it's football and of course you're always happy when he gets up."

Shawn Springs, Cornerback
(On if he was impressed by Ochocinco's kickoffs)

"Yeah, and he just came from not-even-full-throttle starts. He was just letting them rip, I was impressed."

(On if that's something Springs thinks he could do)

"Hell no. I am not a good kicker at all. I can do a squib kick, that's about it."

(On if he fell behind at all because of the time he missed)

"I just need to get some consistent practicing in and things will come back around. But you do have to practice and work on the little things to get the feel and get comfortable and once I do that, I'll be fine.

Terrence Wheatley, Cornerback
(On his performance)

"We have to play better. We have to play a little tighter. You just have to go out there and make plays; just didn't make a whole lot of plays today. I have to go back and look at the technique. I'm not sure what more I could do technique-wise. I have to go back and look at the film. But I have to get better than that."

(On the Bengals' offensive pass interference and the touchdown on the very next play)

"Hopefully we'll get more of those calls. You really don't see that a lot. We got the call, so that was a good thing. Then they came back with a different route. It was a good play by him and a crappy play by me, so that was something that shouldn't have happened, but you live and you learn."

(On the personnel turnover in the secondary from last year)

"It's pretty much the same as last year. Everybody understands there is a lot of competition out there. So you go out there and try to make as many plays as you can and play with confidence. Then whatever happens, happens."

Richard Seymour, Defensive Line
(On the performance of the defensive line)

"I won't say we played well. I think that we still have a lot of work to do, but it's a starting point. It's only our second preseason game. We have a lot of film to go back to. It's good to get out there and get out there quick. I think the biggest thing is working on game situations. You never play at that tempo during practice, so it's good to get out there and go against different guys. I thought it was good, but we have a lot of work to do."

(On Tom Brady wanting to get hit)

"He got up, so that's good. You never want to be the guy to get hit. You want to do the hitting. But, like I said, it's a difficult game and in this league you're definitely going to take some hits."

(On getting pressure in the first half)

"Well, I think we threw a lot of different looks at them. We started off in the 3-4 defense and then moved to the 4-3 defense, which is the four down linemen. We have the ability and the versatility up front to change not only game to game, but also series to series and I think that's going to be an asset for us. We [have to] be better fundamentally if we want to continue to be successful. I think we have to play better. There were some plays that we left out on the field and it's not acceptable for us, and like I said, we got some film we can watch. We got to get better."
