FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots announced today that they have signed WR Paul Turner. Terms of the contract were not announced. In addition, the Patriots released TE Troy Niklas.
Turner, 25, originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia on May 5, 2016 out of Louisiana Tech. The 5-foot-10 193-pounder began his rookie season in the Philadelphia practice squad before being signed to the 53-man roster on Nov. 21, 2016. He played in four games with two starts and registered nine receptions for 126 yards. Turner was released by Philadelphia after training camp last season before signing a futures contract with New Orleans in January. He was released by New Orleans on June 21, 2018.
Niklas, 25, was signed by New England as an unrestricted free agent from Arizona on April 4, 2018. The 6-foot-6, 265-pounder was originally a second round (52nd overall) draft pick by Arizona in the 2014 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame. Niklas has played in 41 NFL games with 18 starts and has accumulated 19 receptions for 203 yards and three touchdowns. He has also played in two postseason games with Arizona in 2015. Last season, Niklas played in 15 games with 11 starts and finished with 11 receptions for 132 yards and one touchdown.
