FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The New England Patriots claimed two former Dallas Cowboys off waivers today; wide receiver DeVeren Johnson and offensive lineman Marques McFadden. Subsequently, the Patriots placed rookie wide receiver Dan Stricker on a reserve/injured list.
Johnson, 24, was originally drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the sixth round of the 2002 NFL draft, the 208th player selected overall, after earning all-conference honors at Sacred Heart. The 6-foot-4-inch, 211-pound wide receiver was released on August 27. He was re-signed by the Cowboys and spent his rookie season on the team's practice squad. At Sacred Heart, he helped the Pioneers to an 11-0 record as a senior while leading the conference with 1,157 yards and 13 touchdowns on 49 receptions.
McFadden, 24, appeared in five games for the Cowboys in 2002 after Dallas claimed him off the Atlanta Falcons practice squad. The 6-foot-5-inch, 320-pound offensive lineman originally signed with the Green Bay Packers as a rookie free agent in 2001. He was released on Aug. 27, 2001 and was out of football during his rookie year. He signed with the Falcons on Jan. 30, 2002, but was released during training camp. He was signed to the Falcons' practice squad in September, where he spent the opening month of the season before signing with the Cowboys. He appeared in five games before an injury landed him on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.
Stricker, 23, was signed by the Patriots as a rookie free agent on May 2, 2003 out of Vanderbilt.
