FOXBORO, Mass. - The New England Patriots announced that they have released safety Hakim Akbar. The Patriots drafted the 6-foot, 212-pound prospect from the University of Washington in the fifth round (163rd overall) of the 2001 NFL draft. He appeared in six games and recorded five special teams tackles before being placed on the reserve/non-football injury list for the remainder of the season on Nov. 16, 2001.
