Nearly 500 students at the Mulcahey Elementary School were treated to a surprise school assembly on Wednesday, Feb. 9 when Patriots S Patrick Chung was a guest reader as part of the school's "Reading Through the Stars" program.
For weeks students had worked hard to read as many books as possible, using planets in the solar system to mark milestones. That Wednesday, Chung helped each of them earn two extra completed books by reading "Let's Go Patriots" and Dr. Seuss' "There's No Place Like Space" to the entire elementary school.
"I think it's important because some kids want to be like me and it's good to explain to them that it's not just physical [prowess], there's a lot of mental aspects that go into [success]," said Chung. "The smarter you are, the easier it is and the better football player you can be, but not just a football player but also doctor, lawyer or whatever you want to be when you grow up."
During the assembly Chung also helped recognize the top achievers in the reading program by awarding them with their own autographed copy of the "Let's Go Patriots" book. He also donated a signed copy of the book to the school's library.
