Tom Quinn joined the Patriots for his first tenure with the team in 2024. Before joining the Patriots staff, Quinn spent time in various roles with the Tennessee Titans and the New York Giants.
Quinn spent the 2023 season with the Tennessee Titans, beginning the year as a special teams assistant before taking over as special teams coordinator for the final six games of the season. Prior to joining the Titans, Quinn was on the staff at Army in 2022, working in game management and analytics.
Working in various roles special teams positions with the New York Giants from 2006-21, Quinn spent the 2018-21 seasons as the assistant special teams coach. In 2021, the Giants were one of only four teams that avoided negative plays, such as turnovers, blocked kicks, or touchdowns allowed, on special teams. Their opponents averaged an NFL-low of 17.8 yards per kickoff return, with the longest gain on 37 returns capped at 32 yards. Kicker Graham Gano furthered his franchise record with 37 consecutive successful field goal attempts, converting 29 of 33 attempts. In 2020, Gano made 31 of 32 field goal attempts. His 96.9 percentage was the second highest in Giants history behind his predecessor, Aldrick Rosas, who made 97.0 percent (32 of 33) in 2018
Under Quinn's guidance, Aldrick Rosas earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 2018 after converting 32 of 33 field goal attempts and 31 of 32 extra point tries in the season. His 32 successful field goals marked the fifth-highest total in Giants history. Aldrick Rosas set a Giants record with a 97.0 field goal percentage, trailing the NFL leader and former Giant Robbie Gould by just 1/100th of a percentage point. From 2018 through 2021, Giants punter Riley Dixon averaged 45.2 yards per punt, ranking second in Giants history behind Steve Weatherford (46.3). Dixon's career 40.6-yard net punting average set the franchise record (since 1976).
Quinn worked as the special teams coordinator for the Giants from 2007-17. In 2016, kickers Josh Brown and Robbie Gould combined to make 21 of 22 field goal attempts, a 95.5 percent success rate, during the team's 11-5 season. Additionally, Dwayne Harris was selected to his first Pro Bowl after leading the Giants in kickoff and punt returns for the second straight season .
In 2015, Josh Brown played in his first Pro Bowl. In 2014, the Giants' kickoff coverage team ranked second in the NFL, limiting opponents to an average return of merely 18.3 yards. Additionally, the Giants led the NFL with five special teams takeaways. In 2011, Quinn's special teams unit helped lead the Giants to a Super Bowl victory over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI.
In 2010, Zak DeOssie, serving as the snapper for both punts and placekicks, secured his second Pro Bowl selection in three seasons in 2010. The Giants' kickoff coverage unit ranked fourth in the NFL, with opponents averaging only 19.7 yards per return.
In 2008, three of the Giants' special teams players—kicker John Carney, punter Jeff Feagles and DeOssie—played for the NFC Pro Bowl team. Quinn began his NFL coaching career in 2006 as the assistant special teams coach and was subsequently promoted to special teams coordinator in 2007. In his first season as special teams coordinator, the Giants defeated the Patriots, 17-14, in Super Bowl XLII.
Quinn began his coaching career at Davidson College in 1991 as a linebackers coach, followed by a stint at James Madison University (1992-94) working with the special teams before earning his first defensive coordinator role at Boston University (1995). He moved on to Holy Cross University (1996-98) and San Jose State University (1999-01) before joining the staff at Stanford in 2002. From 2002-05, Quinn worked at Stanford first as tight ends/special teams coach and then as the outside linebackers/special teams coach.
Quinn was a linebacker at the University of Arizona from 1986 to 1990, where he was a member of three bowl teams.
Quinn attended Foothill High School in Santa Ana, Calif. He earned a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies in 1990 and a master's in education the following year. Quinn and his wife, Alison, have a son, Shane, and two daughters, Logan and Riley.
