Devin McCourty Postgame Press Conference Transcript

New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty addresses the media during his postgame press conference at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, January 13, 2013.

Q: **How surprised were you on that kickoff return?

DM:First thing I was thinking was just 'Get him down. Give our defense a chance to get out there and try to hold them to three points and not just give them seven points easily.' That just comes down to effort. Kyle [Arrington] was running and I was running and we were determined to get him on the ground.

Q:Four times in a row they couldn't get it in the end zone. Can you talk about that?

DM:Last year when I was on this team, Vince [Wilfork] spoke about attitude and playing a certain way, especially once you get into the playoffs, and I think this team has carried that attitude over this year with a lot of the foundation of the defense back. I think guys have that attitude that no matter what happens, usually we're on the end where our offense is putting up a lot of points. If things go wrong, somebody returns a kick or anything like that, we just want to hold guys out of the end zone. We want to make plays down there and just try to play great defense. We know if we can hold teams to three points our offense will do the job and put seven on the board.

Q:What happened on their several long returns?

DM:We'll have to see. If we knew that, we would have fixed it after the first one. We'll be in tomorrow morning and we'll fix that. We have to fix that; we can't afford to give up those type of returns.

Q:What was the game plan for Andre Johnson?

DM:The biggest thing when you play a guy like that is to try to a bunch of different things. I think you can't take away what Aqib [Talib] did today, going out there and just challenging him every play and being able to play one of the top receivers in this league. We did different things at different times, but most of it was just Aqib playing good defense.

Q:You talked earlier this week about how hard Arian Foster is to bring down. How do you think you guys did overall as a defense?

DM:I think there was some good and some bad. When you're playing these playoff games, that's usually how it goes against those good players. We'll have to build on the good we did and fix the bad.
