Let me explain. Beyond having a pair of first-round selections in April's upcoming 2012 NFL Draft, New England has also gone about signing free agent former first-round picks this offseason.
That trend continued on Thursday when the team announced the signing of former Dallas' first-round pick and Ohio State versatile linebacker Bobby Carpenter.
Including Carpenter the Patriots have now signed five former first-round picks this offseason. That list includes former Raiders No. 2 overall pick Robert Gallery, Colts first-rounder Anthony Gonzalez, a second time around with Donte Stallworth and Will Allen.
As of today the Patriots have 10 former first-round picks on the roster. That doesn't include three current unrestricted free agents who played with the team last year – Andre Carter, Shaun Ellis and Gerard Warren.
Hey, maybe one team's (or in some cases a few teams') first-round trash is Bill Belichick's free agent gold!
