Patriots.com News Blitz - 2/8/2007

In today's News Blitz... Will the Patriots franchise CB Asante Samuel or TE Daniel Graham? One New England media outlet thinks so.

The *Boston Herald* explains that today is the first day NFL teams can apply the franchise or transition tags to their unrestricted free agents, addressing specific players the Pats may tag. The franchise tag locks a player in for one more year, paying him an average of the top five salaries at his position. The transition tag allows offers to be made by other teams, but pays the tagged player an average of the top 10 salaries at his position. Also included are notes.

The Boston Globe's Bruce Mohl reports that the battle between StubHub Inc., a California based ticket resale company and the Patriots, who prohibit the resale of their tickets for profit, is raging on. The Patriots in November sued StubHub for allegedly encouraging fans to violate Massachusetts' antiscalping law and the team's prohibition on ticket resales for profit. StubHub in December countersued, alleging the team's policies were designed to corner the market on ticket resales for itself. Yesterday, the Patriots accused StubHub Inc. of reconstructing law and logic to make the "farfetched claim" that the team is trying to monopolize the resale of its own tickets.

Jim McCabe of The Boston Globe offers a piece on golfer Tiger Woods. Included are notes on Pats QB Tom Brady, who will be playing golf at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro Am this week. He wasn't selected to the Pro Bowl, but according to McCabe, he'd prefer to play golf anyway.

Glen Farley of The Enterprise features Stoughton resident Ryan LaCasse, who's a member of the Super Bowl Champion Colts. "I never could have predicted all this," LaCasse said of the chain of events that has unfolded in his life since the Colts' 29-17 win over Chicago in Super Bowl XLI. "It's been pretty crazy."

Buddy Thomas of The Standard-Times explains that there's no arguing against Peyton Manning's greatness now.

Didn't catch yesterday's Patriots.com News Blitz? It included stories on tackle Matt Light making the Pro Bowl, coach Bill Belichick and RB LaDainian Tomlinson getting over the postgame antics from the Pats-Chargers playoff game and more.
