… The last relatively warm day in the foreseeable future saw temperatures plateau in the upper 50s in New England, with bright sunshine greeting the Patriots at their first practice of Colts Week. It was only a walkthrough, though, so, players were without helmets or pads of any kind. Just practice jerseys. The session was held outside on the double fields where training camp is normally held.
… Some good news with regard to injuries Linebackers Dane Fletcher (thumb) and Brandon Spikes (right knee) were back on the field for the first time in several weeks. Though this was only a walkthrough, the fact that they were present is significant because they hadn't been at walkthroughs the previous two weeks.
… The lone absentee today was right tackle Sebastian Vollmer, who left the Eagles game at the end of the first half with what appeared to be a right foot injury. He didn't play at all in the second half of that game.
… Second-year cornerback Phillip Adams was released Tuesday by the team. His spot on the 53-man roster was filled by eight-year veteran DB Nate Jones. The 29-year-old began his NFL career in 2004 with the Dallas Cowboys and has seen stints with Miami and Denver. He was back with the Dolphins earlier this season. He's listed at 5-10, 185. The New Jersey native is the third Rutgers product on the roster now, joining CB Devin McCourty and WR Tiquan Underwood.
… The black jerseys given to Practice Players of the Week – given out only after victories – went this week to three rookies: OLB/DE Markell Carter, RB Shane Vereen, and DB Malcolm Williams.
… A full injury status update, for both the Patriots and Colts, will be posted around 4 p.m. here in this blog entry.
UPDATE … 4:20 P.M.
… Vollmer did not take part at all in today's practice. He was listed as having both a back problem, which had been his trouble in the past, and the right foot issue that sidelined him in Philly.
… Fifteen other Patriots were on the injury report, all of them on a limited participation basis, save right guard Brian Waters (left knee), who was a full participant. Three notable additions were WR/DB/returner Julian Edelman (back), CB Antwaun Molden (concussion), and third-string center Ryan Wendell (calf). Wendell's injury is the same one that limited him in practice and kept him out of the lineup earlier this season.
… The others on the list today were: safety Patrick Chung (right foot), C Dan Connolly (groin), Fletcher, LB Gary Guyton (shoulder), S James Ihedigbo (shoulder), LT Matt Light (right ankle), cornerback Devin McCourty (right shoulder), WR Chad Ochocinco (hamstring), WR Taylor Price (hamstring), WR Matthew Slater (shoulder), and Spikes.
… Out in Indiana, the Colts listed seven players as not having participated in Wednesday practice: guard Ryan Diem (knee), TE Brody Eldridge (hand), DE Dwight Freeney (non-injury/rest), WR Anthony Gonzalez (groin), rookie FB Ryan Mahaffey (concussion), D-tackle Drake Nevis (lower back), and center Jeff Saturday (knee). Guard Joe Reitz (knee) was a full participant.
… No surprise here, but QB Peyton Manning (neck) and TE Dallas Clark (fibula) have been ruled out already for Sunday's contest in Foxborough.
