Tom Brady Postgame Press Conference Transcript

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady addresses the media during his postgame press conference at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, October 20, 2013.

**

On not converting on third down...**
We just haven't been good on third down all year. Obviously, that's a big problem. You can't stay on the field and help our defense out. We have to be better in all areas, but we certainly need to be better on third downs and in the red area. There (are) no excuses. We just didn't play well. I (have) to do a better job out there. That's what I need to do.

On the Jets defense in the second half...
They're a good defense. They put pressure on you in all areas. We didn't do anything offensively to slow them down at all. (The second half) started off poorly. We had a great opportunity to take control of the game and we didn't. We fought our way back. We had plenty of chances. We just didn't get it done.

On Rob Gronkowski...
He played his butt off. All the guys played hard. There was a lot of effort. We played hard. We played for as long as we could. We just didn't make enough plays. This defense is a good defense. They're well coached. There are no easy plays out there. You have to earn them. We just didn't do enough to earn them today.

On if it was frustrating that they were close on so many plays...
It was close and we're close a lot. We just have to start making them, all of us. The balls have to be better thrown. Everyone has to look at themselves and do a better job, because what we're doing right now isn't good enough. Providing a day like this (as example), we're one conversion on third down. We have to do a better job all the way around. Everybody on offense needs to look at what we can do better and certainly make it a point of emphasis. It (converting third downs) has to be a strength for us going forward. You're not going to win many football games going 1-12 (on third down conversions).

On struggling offensively in the third quarter...
I think its poor execution. Like I said, we had a great opportunity to take control of the game and we didn't. We fought hard. We just didn't do what it takes to beat a good defense.

On the interception...
Gronk (Gronkowski) had to cross him out. He flashed open and I threw it. The guy (Antonio Allen) made a good play. That's a ball I shouldn't throw. You can't do that, throw interceptions for touchdowns. That's one way to get you beat.

On Allen's play on the interception...
He made a good play. He undercut the inside routes and Gronk was running across the field. They were coached that way. He made the play. That's what it takes. It takes good plays and he made it. We had opportunities where we had chances to make plays. We've got to throw. We have to catch it. We have to run with it. That's what our job on offense is to do. The only way to score points is to do it consistently. We're just not doing it consistently enough to march the ball down the field and put it into the end zone.

On the penalty on the field goal in overtime...
I don't know. I didn't really see it. I don't even know what they called. I just saw the flag.

On Chris Jones taking responsibility for the penalty...
He's playing hard. The whole defense has really rallied. They lost some veteran leadership, but they come in here and they fight. They were on the field a lot early on and made some plays there for us. They made some plays for the team, all those guys. The young guys who have been in there, Chris, Joe (Vellano) (have made plays). Logan (Ryan) made some plays. Michael Buchanan is making plays. Offensively, we need to do a better job helping the defense out. We have to convert more on third downs. We have to take advantages of the opportunities that we have. We're plenty capable. It's not that we donn't do it, we just don't do it on a consistent basis. It's a team sport and as a team, we're just not there yet. There's still a lot of football to play. Hopefully, we can correct it.

On if he thought Gronkowski would catch the ball on the last drive in regulation...
He ran a great route and we gave him an opportunity. He makes that 99 out of 100 (times), but it was just one of those days where it doesn't happen for us. We still had plenty of other opportunities after that. It really shouldn't have come down to that play if we had been executing better over the course of the day. They put pressure on you. Coverage is going to be tight. There are going to be tight throws and we have to throw. We have to make the plays when they are there.

On if more plays opened up with Gronkowski on the field...
Of course. He's one of the best players in the NFL. You saw what he does today and it was his first game back. All of us have to do a better job. No one is obviously doing it perfect. There is a lot of room for improvement. We've got to get back to work. We have a tough division opponent (Miami Dolphins) coming in that's playing well. We've got to go try and beat them.

On not executing on offense...
We're working hard in practice and we're trying to get the job done. For one reason or another, we're not quite there yet. We're not clicking how we need to on third down and in the red area. We've been inconsistent certainly in the passing game. We've got to try and figure out how to get better and work hard at it, so we can get better.
