The New England Patriots will return to the confines of Gillette Stadium this week after traveling to face Jacksonville in London's Wembley Stadium. The Patriots will host the New York Jets in the second meeting between the two teams this season. They faced the Jets on Thursday Night Football on Sept. 19 at MetLife Stadium, a 24-3 Jets victory.

MAYE-KING HISTORY

Since 1950, Drake Maye and Dan Marino are the only quarterbacks with at least 500 passing yards and at least 5 touchdown passes in their first two starts. Maye threw for 243 yards and 3 touchdowns in his first career start vs. Houston (10/13) and 276 yards and 2 touchdowns last week at Jacksonville (10/20). Maye can become the first rookie quarterback with at least 240 yards passing and at least 2 touchdown passes in his first three starts since 1950

SERIES HISTORY

The New England Patriots and New York Jets will meet for the second of two scheduled meetings in 2024. The Jets beat New England 24-3 on Thursday Night Football on Sept. 19 at MetLife Stadium. The Patriots will try to avoid being swept by the Jets for the first time since the 2000 season.

The Jets broke a 15-game losing streak overall in a 17-3 regular season finale win at Gillette Stadium on Jan. 7, 2024. It also broke up a 14-game home winning streak by New England.

New England leads the series 74-56-1 overall. The Patriots are 38-25-1 in regular season home games against the Jets, including 18-4 at Gillette Stadium.

The teams have played in the postseason three times – a 1985 Wild Card game, a 2006 Wild Card game and an AFC Divisional game in 2010. New England beat the Jets 26-14 in 1985 at the Meadowlands en route to Super Bowl XX. In 2006, the Patriots defeated the Jets 37-16 at Gillette Stadium, and the Jets beat the Patriots 28-21 in the 2010 Divisional playoff game in Foxborough.

New England is 45-18 against the Jets since Robert Kraft purchased the team in 1994, including two postseason games.

New England's 74 overall victories over the Jets (including two playoff wins) are the second-most over any single opponent, trailing only the 78 all-time wins over Buffalo.

SCOUTING THE MATCHUPS

By Paul Perillo

When the Patriots run - Edge: Jets

The days of the Patriots potent running game seem like a thing of distant past as Rhamondre Stevenson and the ground attack once again failed to get going in London. The Patriots managed just 20 yards on 12 carries (excluding quarterback scrambles) against a Jaguars defense that has struggled all season. Stevenson, who returned to the lineup after missing the Houston game with a foot injury, picked up 18 yards on seven carries. That came on the heels of an equally poor showing against the Texans in Week 6. After a sizzling start to the season, the Patriots now rank 22nd in the league with an average of 111 rushing yards per game. The Jets run defense has been average, allowing 127.7 yards per game to rank 17th in the league. But on a per carry basis New York ranks ninth, allowing 4.2 yards per rush. The Jets boast a strong interior with Javon Kinlaw and Quinnen Williams in front of a solid pair of linebackers in Quincy Williams and C.J. Mosley. The Patriots fell behind quickly in the first meeting last month and weren't able to run the ball as much as offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt would have liked, but the Jets held New England to 66 yards on the ground (excluding quarterback scrambles). Look for Van Pelt to lean on Stevenson early, but the Jets should be able to keep this ground game under wraps.

When the Patriots pass - Edge: Jets

On paper this looks like a very difficult matchup for Drake Maye and the Patriots. The Jets have a strong secondary that ranks second in the league, allowing just 164.7 yards per game, plus a potent pass rush that is third in the NFL in sacks per pass play. Will McDonald leads the team with 8 sacks, and the Jets top projected pass rusher Haason Reddick ended his holdout and could be back in the lineup in Foxborough. However, some of the pieces of that stingy secondary are banged up and the Jets needed to venture deep onto the practice squad during last week's loss to the Steelers. Corners D.J. Reed and Michael Carter missed the Steelers game, as did safety Chuck Clark. New York also lost safeties Ashtyn Davis and Tony Adams in Pittsburgh, leaving Sauce Gardner as the lone healthy starter. Former Patriot Jalen Mills filled in along with Brandon Echols, but the group had some trouble handling George Pickens and the Steelers deep passing game. Maye has shown the ability to make plays down the field so that may be an area Van Pelt looks to exploit. That is assuming the pass protection holds up, which was not the case in the first meeting when the Jets recorded seven sacks, including two against Maye when the rookie cleaned up in garbage time. Injuries continue to be an issue up front, so keeping Maye upright won't be an easy task.

When the Jets run - Edge: Jets

It's hard to feel good about the Patriots run defense after three straight weeks of struggles. The Dolphins, Texans and Jaguars posted rushing totals of 193, 192 and 171 yards, respectively, and Jacksonville embarrassed the Patriots by running the ball on 17 consecutive plays in the blowout loss in London. Jerod Mayo called his team soft in the aftermath, citing his team's inability to run the ball and stop the run. New England ranks 21st in the league, allowing 136.1 yards per game on the ground. The Jets haven't been able to get things going in that department, however, as neither Breece Hall (95-348-3) nor Braelon Allen (37-155-1) has been overly productive. But given the Patriots struggles it would make sense if Todd Downing, the Jets new play caller, tries to keep it on the ground early on. If that's the case the Patriots will need someone other than Davon Godchaux to step up and contain the run. The linebacker play has been a problem, particularly since Ja'Whaun Bentley went down with an injury in Week 2. Mayo has tried Raekwon McMillan, Christian Elliss and Marte Mapu inside but none of the combinations have worked. The physicality and discipline need to improve or it could be another long day up front.

When the Jets pass - Edge: Jets

Aaron Rodgers has not resembled his old self much this season, but one such occasion when he did came back in Week 3 against the Patriots. Rodgers smoothly worked his way in and out of the pocket and lit up the New England secondary to the tune of 281 yards and a passer rating of 118.9, by far his best of the season. Rodgers has a bevy of options in the passing game including the newly acquired DaVante Adams along with Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard, tight end Tyler Conklin and both running backs. When Rodgers has the time, he still shows flashes of his former self, and the Patriots secondary seems to be trending in the wrong direction. Christian Gonzalez struggled the last two games tracking Stefon Diggs and Brian Thomas, and the numbers could have been worse if those games were more competitive and the opponents continued to throw in the fourth quarter. If the Patriots aren't able to get pressure on Rodgers, something the defense has struggled to do in recent weeks, the Jets have enough weapons to move the ball consistently through the air.

Special Teams - Edge: Jets

Even the Patriots special teams are struggling following a disastrous 96-yard punt return for a touchdown by Jacksonville's Parker Washington. The Jags executed the return perfectly as Washington barely had to elude any tacklers on his way to paydirt. Meanwhile the Patriots haven't been able to get much production out of their return game with JaMycal Hasty and Antonio Gibson handling kicks and Marcus Jones on punts. Joey Slye and Bryce Baringer have been steady in the kicking department, which has been a bright spot. New York kicker Greg Zuerlein hasn't been his typically reliable self, missing five of his 13 field goal attempts, including a potential game-winner in a loss to Denver in Week 4. Veteran Thomas Morstead has experienced no such struggles as he remains one of the most effective punters in the league. Xavier Gipson is the Jets return man and he has had trouble getting loose. He also fumbled twice on punt returns against the Steelers, although both went out of bounds and didn't lead to turnovers. The Patriots discipline in the kicking game has been lacking, and until that turns around it's hard to give them the edge.

PATRIOTS TO WATCH

  • QB Drake Maye has thrown 5 touchdown passes in his first two starts with 3 touchdowns vs. Houston (10/13) and 2 at Jacksonville (10/20), already the most touchdown passes among any Patriots rookie in their first three starts. If Maye connects on 3 touchdowns this week vs. the New York Jets, he will match Dan Marino (1983) and Marcus Mariota (2015), who, as rookies, each recorded a record 8 touchdowns passes in their first three starts (since 1950).
  • Since 1950, Maye and Marino are the only quarterbacks with at least 500 passing yards and at least 5 touchdown passes in their first two starts. Maye threw for 243 yards and 3 touchdowns in his first career start vs. Houston (10/13) and 276 yards and 2 touchdowns last week at Jacksonville. Maye can become the first rookie quarterback with at least 240 yards passing and at least 2 touchdown passes in his first three starts since 1950 if he reaches those numbers this week against the Jets.
  • Marino and Brock Purdy set the NFL record with at least 2 touchdown passes in each of their first five starts as rookies. Maye can become the first rookie quarterback since Purdy in 2022 with at least 2 touchdown passes in his first three starts.
  • TE Hunter Henry enters this week's game against the Jets with a team-leading 27 receptions for 313 yards. He is on pace to finish the season with 65 receptions for 760 yards, which would be career-high marks. While with the Chargers, he had a season-high 60 receptions (2020) and 652 receiving yards (2019).
  • Henry has two games with 8 receptions in 2024 – vs. Seattle (9/15) and at Jacksonville (10/20). If he records 8 or more receptions against the Jets, he will be the first New England tight end since TE Rob Gronkowski in 2017 with at least three 8-plus reception games.
  • S Kyle Dugger registered his fifth career game with at least 10 tackles after finishing with a team-leading 11 total tackles last week at Jacksonville. If he reaches at least 10 tackles this week, it will be his first back-to-back 10-tackle game of his career, and he will be the first to record back-to-back 10-tackle games for the Patriots since LB Ja'Whaun Bentley had a three-game stretch with at least 10 total tackles during the 2022 season: 10 tackles at Arizona (12/12), 10 tackles at Las Vegas (12/18) and 11 tackles vs. Cincinnati (12/24).
