Patriots make changes to the practice squad

The New England Patriots announced today that they have signed LB Trevor Reilly and TE Will Tye to the practice squad and released S Alex Carter from the practice squad.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. –The New England Patriots announced today that they have signed LB Trevor Reilly and TE Will Tye to the practice squad and released S Alex Carter from the practice squad. In addition, the Patriots placed OL Cole Toner on the practice squad injured reserve list. 

Reilly, 29, spent time with New England on the practice squad in 2016 before being signed to the Miami practice squad in December, where he played in two games and one postseason game. The 6-foot-5, 240-pounder originally entered the NFL as a seventh round draft pick (233rd overall) of the New York Jets in the 2014 NFL Draft out of Utah. He played two seasons with the Jets before being released prior to the start of the 2016 season and then was signed to the New England practice squad on Oct. 20. He has played in 31 NFL games with 11 total tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and 22 special teams tackles. 

Tye, 25, originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the New York Giants in 2015 out of Stony Brook. After beginning his rookie season on the practice squad, he was signed to the 53-man roster on Oct. 3. The 6-foot-2, 256-pounder played in 29 games with 17 starts during two seasons with the Giants and caught 90 passes for 859 yards with four touchdowns. Tye was released by the Giants on Sept. 2, 2017, and claimed by the New York Jets on Sept. 3. He played in three games with one start for the Jets, finishing with four receptions for 38 yards, before being released on Oct. 3. 

Carter, 22, was signed by New England to the practice squad on Oct. 9. He was originally drafted by the Detroit Lions in the third round (80th overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Stanford. The 6-foot, 200-pounder missed his rookie season due to injury. Carter began the 2016 season on the Detroit practice squad before being added to the 53-man roster on Dec. 24, 2016. He appeared in one regular season game at Dallas (12/26) and did not accrue any statistics, while seeing action on special teams. Carter went to training camp with the Lions this year and was released prior to the start of the regular season.
