Michael McCarthy joins the Patriots staff as an offensive coaching assistant coach in 2024, bringing over a decade of coaching experience to New England.
McCarthy spent the last 5 seasons (2019-2023) at Brown University coaching the offensive line. During his tenure at Brown, McCarthy helped to revitalize Brown's offense into one of the most high-scoring and up-tempo offenses in the Ivy League. McCarthy's offensive line paved the way for the 15th ranked offense (total offense) in the nation in 2019 and 12th ranked offense (total offense) in the nation in 2021. In 2023, McCarthy was a part of a coaching staff that helped reach Brown's highest win total since 2015. While coaching the offensive line for the Brown Bears, McCarthy produced All-Ivy offensive line selections and honorees every year with Jack Connolly being named to 1st team All-Ivy for the 2023 season.
McCarthy spent the 2018 season on staff at Rutgers, assisting the offensive coordinator and working with the team's quarterbacks.
He spent the 2016 and 2017 seasons in the NFL as offensive quality control/assistant offensive line coach for the Detroit Lions. McCarthy worked closely with TJ Lang, who earned a Pro Bowl invitation in 2017. During the 2016 season, McCarthy played a significant role in developing the team's offensive line, which featured rookies including Taylor Decker and Graham Glasgow. As a result, the Detroit Lions earned a berth in the NFC Wild Card game.
Prior to his time in Detroit, McCarthy spent the 2015 season as the offensive quality control coach for the Cleveland Browns. McCarthy worked with the offensive line which included Hall of Famer Joe Thomas, Alex Mack, Mitch Schwartz & Joel Bitonio.
Early on in his career McCarthy spent time in a variety of roles in college football. In 2014, McCarthy coached the tight ends at North Carolina Central and contributed to the Eagles earning a share of the MEAC championship. McCarthy spent two seasons (2012-2013) at Tulane as a member of the coaching staff that ended an 11-year postseason drought. Prior to that McCarthy served as the video director for Western Michigan for two seasons (2010-2011). McCarthy's first coaching position was at The College of New Jersey as the team's offensive line coach in 2009. In 2008, he earned his first NFL opportunity as a video/scouting intern for the New York Jets. McCarthy's career began at the collegiate level when he took a position working with the Rutgers video and recruiting departments in 2007.
McCarthy played college football at Widener University, playing both outside linebacker and long snapper.
McCarthy graduated from Widener University with a bachelor's degree in business administration and a concentration in sports management. He also completed his master's degree in sports management at Western Michigan University and postgraduate work at Tulane University. McCarthy is a native of East Brunswick, New Jersey, and he and his wife, Catie, have two children, Michael Jr. and Delaney.
