FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Patriots announced today that they have signed free agent tight end Scott Chandler. Terms of the contract were not announced.
Chandler, 29, has played in 75 NFL games, with 35 starts, and has registered 182 receptions for 2,120 yards and 17 touchdowns during his career. Last season in Buffalo, he played in 16 games with five starts and finished with 47 receptions for 497 yards and three touchdowns. He recorded career highs in 2013 when he caught 53 passes for 655 yards. He also had two touchdown receptions.
Chandler is veteran of seven NFL seasons with the San Diego Chargers (2007-08), New York Giants (2009), Dallas Cowboys (2010) and the Buffalo Bills (2010-14). He spent the majority of the 2009 season on the Dallas Cowboys practice squad until being signed to the New York Giants' 53-man roster for the final two games of the season.
The 6-foot-7, 260-pounder, originally entered the NFL as a fourth-round draft pick (129th overall) by San Diego in 2007 out of Iowa. After playing in just one game as a rookie, Chandler spent the 2008 season on the Chargers' injured reserve list. He was released by San Diego on April 27, 2009 and was signed to the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad on Sept. 5, 2009. Chandler spent the first 15 weeks on the Dallas practice squad before being signed by the New York Giants to the 53-man roster on Dec. 23, 2009. He was inactive for the final two games of the regular season. After being released by the Giants at the end of training camp in 2010, Chandler was re-signed by Dallas and began the season on the practice squad before being signed to the 53-man roster and playing in nine games. Dallas released Chandler on Dec. 1, 2010. He was claimed off waivers by Buffalo and played in four games with one start for the Bills to finish that season. Chandler played the next four seasons with the Bills before being released on March 11, 2015.
